2013 Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships (Easters) Results

The USU had another incredibly successful Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships, with USU1 (Daniel Farinha, Steph White, Michael Rees) beating USU3 (Lucy Connell, Harry Stratton, Sarah Mourney) in a USU v USU Grand Final to win the championship! We also had 7 of the top 10 novice speakers, 4 breaking teams, 25 of the top 100 speakers, 7 breaking adjudicators and all 11 teams were in the top 35 teams of the tournament.

Congratulations to Michael Rees and Daniel Farinha who tied for the best overall speaker with an outstanding average of 78.5 points per round, with Michael also awarded the top novice speaker. Congratulations also to Harry Stratton (3rd), Subeta Vimalarajah & Tim Asimakis (equal 4th), Sarah Mourney (equal 7th), Tim Sullivan & Steph White (equal 9th) who also ranked in the top ten novice speakers, and to Felix Donovan as well who is classified as a pro and ranked 6th overall.

Congratulations as well to USU4 (Tim Sullivan, Tim Asimakis, Gabrielle McClymont) who broke 4th and were knocked out in the Quarter Finals, and to USU2 (Felix Donovan, Subeta Vimalarajah, Alexi Polden) who broke 12th but were capped out of the finals.

We also had 8 breaking adjudicators: Elle Jones, Daniel Swain, Emma Johnstone, Nick Chung, Evie Woodforde, Sam Molloy, Bec Barrett and Tim Matthews!

Finally, we must say thank you to our perennial lucky charm and angelic protector Louise Anthony for guiding us all through another fun and successful tournament.

2012 Australasian Women's Debating Championships (Women's) Results

Congratulations to Joanna Connolly and Emma Johnstone for winning the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships!

The USU dominated Women's this year, breaking four teams, of which three made it to the Grand Final. The top 4 speakers were from the USU and we also had 9 of the top 15 speakers. More congratulations must go to Abigail McCarthy who was the best speaker at the tournament.

2012 Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships (Australs) Results

The USU was highly successful at the 2012 Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships. Particular congratulations must go to USU3 (Bec Barrett, Nick Chung, Emma Johnstone) for breaking to the octofinals, USU1 (Elle Jones, Daniel Swain, Paul Karp) for competing in the quarterfinals and USU2 (Ed Miller, Dom Bowes, Nina Ubaldi) for competing in the semifinals.

The USU was also very successful on the individual speaker tab with four speakers placing within the top twenty: congratulations to Paul Karp (16th), Dom Bowes (12th), Elle Jones (4th) and Daniel Swain (3rd). Elle Jones was also crowned the best reply speaker at the tournament.

Congratulations must also go to Annie Gribble and Felix Donovan who broke as adjudicators, Lucian Tan who adjudicated the ESL Grand Final and Daniel Farinha who adjudicated the Grand Final.

The USU sent 10 teams and 16 adjudicators to compete at ANU Easters and was incredibly successful, with 8 adjudicators and 7 teams breaking to the finals and 6 novice speakers in the top 10.

Particular congratulation must also go to Daniel Farinha who was the best novice speaker at the tournament, as well as Alex Downie, Evie Woodforde, Felix Donovan, Angud Chawla and Emma Johnstone who also placed in the top 10 novice speakers. Congratulations as well to Tim Matthews who was the 4th best speaker overall but not an Easters novice and thus was not announced in the top 10 novice speakers. 2012 World Universities Debating Championships Results

The USU was extremely successful at the 2012 De La Salle Worlds with one team competing in the Grand Final, two speakers being placed in the top 10 in the world, three teams breaking to the finals and four of our adjudicators breaking as adjudicators. The results were good enough to maintain the USU's offical ranking as the best debating institution in the world, ahead of Yale (2nd), Monash (3rd) and Oxford (4th).

Particular congratulations must go to Daniel Swain and Elle Jones who were runners up in the Grand Final, Patrick Caldwell and Paul Karp who were ranked 7th and 4th best speakers in the world respectively, Bec Barrett and Rob Chiarella who broke to the octofinals and Bronwyn Cowell, Bronte Lambourne, Joanna Connolly and Tim Mooney who all broke as adjudicators.

Finally, a huge thanks must go to Louise Anthony, our lucky charm and USU representative who safely guided our contingent through the tournament and without whom it would not have been the same. From the entire contigent, thank you Louise.
